Languages

Many languages and even more dialects exist throughout the world. A character is familiar with one native tongue (usually that of their home nation) and may learn additional languages by buying the Speak Language skill one or more times.
Bookof alias
The leading authority on Old World languages is the sage Balban al-Baabar at the Unseelie Court in Ishtaduk. His 33-volume opus, In Other Words: The Origin and Evolution of Language examines examines every spoken and written language to the greatest of detail. The briefest of summaries follows.

MAJOR LANGUAGES

Ahrilunish: This language is spoken by the tribes of Ahrimesh in northern Farid and by a number of nomadic peoples in southern Skenfirth. Ahrilunish is one of the roots of modern Faridian.
Anupam: The language of the continent of Anupam.
Enochian: The language of Heaven and Hell. This alien language utilizes an alphabet that is derived from religiously significant constellations and star clusters. It is a language filled with divine power. It is the language of Shoshannic religious texts and ceremonies. al-Baabar devotes almost an entire volume to his theory that Enochian is the original language of all mankind and that the confusing plethora of modern languages spoken today are the result of a divine curse for mankind’s sins.
Cilgarren: The language of the original nomadic peoples of Cilgarren.
Dwursian: The language of Eastern Summan. A harsh and abrupt language, considered a closely guarded secret, it is frowned upon (and often punished) when foreigners speak this language.
Gelder: The language of Gelderland, Western Summan.
Fae: The language of the Fey, sometimes known as Sylvan. Sylvan is also the native language of the Feyen Isles. One of the world’s oldest languages. It is the most widely spoken language in the world, even among native speakers of other tongues. Anyone who plans to travel across national borders understands the need to speak Fae.
Faridian: One of the youngest languages in the world. Faridian was believed to be a pure tongue (free from foreign influence) until Balban al-Baabar proved otherwise. In Volume 13 of his essays, Baabar demonstrates how a language as widespread as Faridian could not have remained free of outside influences. Faridian is spoken throughout Farid and used exclusively by the Unseelie Court. It is the language of scribes, lawyers, clerks and accountants.
Kalanese: Though usually ignored by most scholars of written language, Baabar studied the aquatic language extensively. He did not group it with the other languages of the Old World, stating that it’s roots were of unknown origin. Kalanese is the native tongue of the Isles of Tuyen. It is a complex language that is difficult to translate into anything but Anupam. A simplistic pidgin dialect, heavily aspirated, is spoken above water. Below the water Kalanese is a series of whistles, fluting sounds, sub- and super-sonic pulses which landwalkers cannot hear. It is thought that whales and dolphins may comprehend this language.
Kazukian: The language of the continent of Ken’ Kazuki.
Kushite: The language spoken across the continent of Skenfirth.
Pakoa: The language of the continent of Anaru.
Rajiini: The language spoken in the jungles of Rajiin.
Summanian: The common trade tongue of Western Summan.
Thalian: The language of Northern Summan.
Waldertongue: The language of Uberwald, Western Summan.

MINOR DIALECTS

Banu: This dialect is spoken widely in southern Farid.
Druidic: This dialect is derived from it’s parent language Celestial. It is a sacred language to the Shoshannic Druids.
Rusik (The Northern Tongue): This dialect is shared by the tribal peoples of the Northern Wastes.
Suunz (The Frozen Tongue): This dialect is shared by the tribal peoples of the Sunless South.
