Globe3.7.bmp Dark dwarves have flat, fishy, cataract-ridden eyes and wild, thick hair frequently fashioned into aggressive spikes and held in place with bat guano.

A filthy people, it is said that the smell of a dark dwarf is peculiarly unpleasant and it’s unique blend of old fish, rot, and burned chemicals can never be forgotten. These mad little bastards are seldom seen above ground, but when they do emerge from the deep shadows they strike fear into the hearts of most right-thinking folk, and for good reason. Derro flirt with insanity, they embrace it and thrive upon it, they utilize deadly poisons and hallucinogenics during their religious ceremonies (and, it must be said, for recreational purposes). Other, saner, people would never dream of subjecting themselves to unknown forces or to the filth and madness that derro consider normal.

Wolfgang Baur wrote “The Ecology of the Derro” in Kobold Quarterly (Issue 1), it is this article that provides the genesis for the World of Llowellen’s own dark dwarves who live far below the subterranean halls of the mountain dwarves. In the darkest depths, deep beneath the mountains of Eastern Summan in sprawling, ancient cities (built by unknown hands) the derro live in a lawless and dangerously free society.
