Imagine Kathy Bates, cast as a CGI/Planet-of-the-Apes-esque sibeccai, in the Guillermo del Toro live action World of Llowellen movie…
This friendly woman has an open and jovial face and the body of a bull. Thick and stocky in every direction, Jamila is buxom, big-bellied and red-faced; she has calluses on her hands that are thicker than hide.
Employed with her husband, by the Merchant House Summonel, Jamila tended to the dozen or so lizards and turtles being used by the caravan to haul their wagons and carts across the desert sands; and to the ostrich herd they brought along for food and eggs.
Sara hired Jamila and her husband from the sooqs of Banu. Her husband was killed by the pirates, decapitated as he stood protectively over his wife. Jamila fainted with the horror and shock of it; and awoke to spend a month in slavery. Forced by violence to wait on the hands and feet of a band of anarchic desert raiders, Jamila’s grief was terrible.
How could the Sand King allow such vicious robbery on his sands?
A flame was lit in Jamila’s grief stricken heart when she heard Alias’ passionate sermon at the helm. The driver didn’t understand everything the Prophet was saying, but he spoke of sacrifice and humility being the way forward. The Prophet’s words resonated in her heart, these merchants had ideas above their station and look at what happened to them and their grand ideas! And look at what it has done to her and her poor, beloved Hadrod. It is terrible.
And some of the comments he made! Did the Prophet think she were a whore because of the pirate’s treatment? Did he believe she was a hedonist for wishing herself a warm meal and coffee? Jamila had dared to ask Quin these questions, that evening in the kitchen.
Jamila tends to food preparation and the more menial tasks on board the Princess Parizade, she has taken a room away from the others in the crew quarters, but she doesn’t miss the chance to hear Prophet Alias speak. If the Prophet is speaking and she is able, Jamila will be there. Whether or not he notices… well, that’s another matter.
